Why I make whippet coats

It started with my boyfriend’s whippet becoming my best friend… oops!

I've always loved dogs, and growing up during the era of 101 Dalmatians planted a seed in my heart—I dreamed of having a Dalmatian one day. Little did I know that a whole world of sighthounds existed.

Growing up in Taiwan, Sighthounds were never on my radar. It wasn't until I moved to London that I encountered these wonderful hounds! One rainy day while walking through Hyde Park, I saw an elderly man strolling peacefully with a black Greyhound wearing a red coat, both seemingly without a care in the world. The scene warmed my heart—his care for the greyhound and their serene companionship left a lasting impression on me.

A few years later, I met my boyfriend who had a five-month-old Whippet named Onyx. Let's just say dating with a puppy, yet alone a whippet puppy, was a bit chaotic. Most of our dates involved training and playing with Onyx in the park. Sounds charming, right? Well, not always—whenever we tried to sit down for coffee or a meal to focus on each other, Onyx would bark impatiently or insist on leaving (or both).

There were moments when I felt like Onyx saw me as competition, as if he was afraid I'd steal his Dad 😅.

But time has a way of changing things. As we spent more time together and became closer, Onyx became my best friend. His gentle, lazy nature and the cosy warmth he brings are a constant comfort to me. His silliness always brings joy to dreary days. Onyx (much to my boyfriend’s joking dismay) seemingly became more my dog than his, sometimes looking at me for instructions when we were out instead of my boyfriend. I’m sure me sneaking him treats had something to do with this 🙃…

When I started seeing him as my own dog and took care of him, I paid a lot more attention to him than before. I was curious about what he ate and wore. Food-wise, he was always in good care: his coat was beautifully shiny and his movements healthy. However, I always struggled to find him clothes that I was excited about that I felt could match his sweet temperament.

Luckily, with my background in Fashion Design and Production, from working with high-end designers to global sports brands, I knew this was something I could change. Quality and aesthetics had always been important in my career and had always influenced my choices when buying clothes, consciously seeking well-crafted, stylish pieces that embody thoughtful design.

It seemed so obvious I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it sooner. If I couldn’t find what I wanted for Onyx, why not make those clothes myself? Perhaps, other owners were also looking for high quality clothes for their best friends too.

So here we are!

I started Sightly late last year in London, working with textile mills and producers I trusted, with materials carefully chosen (including a trip to Japan to meet the suppliers in person). We keep production small, simple yet efficient - keeping the design, sampling and production of Sightly clothing all here in London, at our studio.

I couldn’t be more excited to share Sightly with you, and look forward to always striving for better and better clothes for our wonderful sighthound companions.
